The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a distinct direction.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now refining the project with a revised vision, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.

Here is the entire text from the president's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its potential to our players.

The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. After some time of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.

His management and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.

The President

Background of the New Head

The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling advancement on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the opponents with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your team can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."

Project Ethos lacks an announced release date or platforms, but fans can look forward to more updates as creation continues.
